Is this a Gen-II or Gen-III LT1??
I'll delete this thread right after I get a good answer.
I'm having issues with my car starting (another issue in another thread), and I'm suspecting a possibly bad ICM. I called AutoZone to see if they have a tester but they said my LT1 is a Gen-III and they only have a Gen-II tester. It's a 1994 Pontiac Firebird Formula. I was always told that the 90s model LT1 was a Gen-II so I need to know if they're right, if they're idiots, or what. I've done a search but the ones I went through went completely off-topic.

It sounds like the both of you may have your signals mixed up. What parts jockey was probably referring to is a tester for the OBD system in that they only have one for OBDII. If he said "Gen II" then he needs help. The LT1 engine is Gen II based. LS platforms are Gen III.
No reason to delete it. Perhaps others can benefit from your information.

He's refering to the ignition tester supplied by wells, genII is older machine handles many common ICM and some voltage regulators, genIII handles some additional ICM's (lt1 and vortec trucks, i know) but no regulators. Nothing to do with OBD2.
