Cam Choices???
I am thinking about going with a cam over the winter I am looking at the GM Hotcam, from Summit. The car is a 94 Z28, mods are 3200 FTI Lock-up Pacesetter LT's, Moroso CAI, Flowmaster catback, Transgo shiftkit. Anybody have any suggestions about any decent cams with prices? I know I will need a tune, I have already from PCM 4 Less now, I will send it back to Brian. What do you think of the hotcams?

It depends on what you're looking to get from the cam. If it's just for sound, the LT4 hot cam and CC306 cam make me squirt squirt squirt all day long. They make good power, too, if you use the right supporting mods. If it's strictly for power, you can get custom grind cams but they're not really worth the price unless you plan on adding a bit of money into the motor for much more power. I'm not a professional, just stating my opinion. Any pros out there, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I'd love to learn more myself.

Lloyd Elliott told me the hotcam springs were really meant for the lightweight LT4 valves but with standard LT1 valves they are not quite up to the task. You can get the Howards springs Lloyd also uses sometimes that would be perfect for a hotcam. I don't remember the part number but I think they are around $100 or so and you can use your stock hardware with them. As far as the hotcam goes though you could always go custom and gain a little more HP for not too much more money. Lloyd also told me his version of the CC503 will make around 10 hp more than an off the shelf CC503. About the best price I've seen on a 503 is around $270...custom from LE is $300 shipped. That's the way to go.

I got my cc503 and valve spring kit for around $400 brand new. cc503 works great with stock heads and even better if you decide to do head work later on. Had both the lt4 and cc503, I felt I had a bit more torque down low with the lt4 but I liked the 503 better overall

The picture is wrong on the first pic but that kit does fit your motor. I would trust the stock lifters more than some budget Comps so don't bother. You can usually pick up a used 503 on the classifieds for about $150. Roller cams don't break in like old flat tappets so a used cam will get the job done. Save your money for a decent set of springs, rockers, and pushrods. Never cheap out on the valvetrain because it's most likely to break.

FYI, the only difference in the 2 cams linked is the dowel pin length. on the 07-503 cam it has the longer dowel required for the LT1, the 08-503 can be used you just have to swap the dowel pin out of your factory cam in it.

Thank-You for the info well appreciated I am going to go with this cam, everybody seems to say nothing but good about it. I will use my lifters, but I think I will buy beehive springs.. Once again thank-you.

i'm one of those guys that likes to go big or go home to an extent. When i went to do my cam i had to replace lifters and springs so i figured i might as well just order a set of le2 heads from lloyd. I used a comp cam xfi 280 which pulls great up top. Although this is probably a bigger cam then you want to go with. Buy a set of 1.6 rr some new stock lifters and pushrods when you replace the springs if you dont want to touch the heads... regardless of whatever direction you go a cammed lt1 will make you fall in love with the car all over again.

I would like to go with 1.6rr's but I am also building a 5.3 for another car. I will buy new valve springs with the cam, what are the specs on the factory LT1 cams? Even with the stock rockers this cam should wake the car up big time, hopefully.

before you go and buy the beehives, there's a complete valve spring kit I used with the 503 and le1 heads and Lloyd said they were fine to use, he just added shims to them for his own peace of mind, whole kit was like $104 http://www.alexsparts.com/lt1-valve-...rs-locks-cups/ I apologize, if they are not a sponser

I'm planning to cam my car very soon. I'm torn between the cc503 and hotcam kit. I'm leaning towards the 503 because I want a bigger mid range and top end. Can I do this for around the hotcam kit price? I noticed the hotcam kit doesn't have lifters. Are they a necessity? Or can I get by with just:
-cc503 cam
-Valve springs with hardened pushrods (post above^^)
-1.6rockers
-gaskets
-tune
