Default How much does AC effect power?

I was just curious how much slower an LT1 is with the AC on. I personally can feel a difference. I was curious if anyone knew exactly how much of a change it actually is.

For instance, if I ran in the quarter with it on and then with it off. Would I see a different time?

Thanks for the help.

Of course you would! Its like adding a whole new accessory when your A/Cs clutch kicks in puts alot more resistance on the belt.

I hear you won't feel much of a difference. I guess the A/C shuts off at WOT so you won't be losing any horsepower.

I can definitly feel a difference at WOT. I just wanted to know if this was actually proven.

I personally believe the car is slower, but I would rather know that just guess...

Because if it didn't make a difference, I mine as well just keep the AC on at all times. (Even if I'm racing)

The AC turns off at WOT the difference you are probably feeling is the warmer temp in the cooling system after driving with the AC on, plus the drag change from part throttle to WOT before the clutch fully disengages. If you go to the track and cool down between runs there should be no difference with a run of the AC on vs off...

the ac doesn't turn off during WOT. They started this i believe in 99 or 2000 on the fbody.

With the ac on in my 95 I traped 3 0r 4 mph slower each time and I got the time slip to prove it.

dont run the a/c at the track... the condisation will leak on the track and make it trouble for the rest of us.

on the street... it only take a second to turn the *** off.

Wrong.... AC clutch disable happens at WOT, and if you have a tuner whatever TPS you feel like setting it to..

I did test mine on the 1/4 mile about a year ago, there was a difference of .35 more on the run.

the A/C clutch kicks out when there is a major load on the engine so you wouldnt see a difference, now when the a/c is on the compressor usually uses any where from 20 to 40 horses depending on the compressor

the WOT a/c cutout has been around since....well since they started computerizing! It certainly didnt start in the f-body in 99. As said before the differences in the Quarter times are from extra heat from the a/c and making the engine work harder to turn the a/c creating heat soak of the intake before it turns off. Not to mention the much higher underhood temps and running cooling fans. Next time you guys try the a/c quarter thing dont use the a/c until 1 or 2 seconds before the launch. this will keep the heat from building up before the run and give closer results. You may still see a small difference from the a/c being on right before WOT. I suppose if you were curious enough you could wire a temporary light to the a/c compressor to prove it. From looking at various year lt1 files all the LT1's were cutoff at 99.6% and the L99's were 92.2%. I checked both b and f body files. Dont know on the LSx. I also suppose that those of you that dont actually get the cutoff may not be getting 100% on the TPS. Might want to check that!
