Default opti question, need ASAP

I have a 94 Z...with the spline driven opti. whay way dos the rotor point when at TDC? for some odd reason my GMPP opti goes in anyway..... I put everything back together and tried to fire it....bunch of bckfires. I am back down to the opti....

I was able to face to toward plug wire #1 at TDC. put it back on....nothing.

which way does it go? I am just really frustrated. can anyone help me out?

I am so close but yet so far.

take it back apart and look at the drive shaft. you will see the key spline, mark it with a felt tip marker so you can line it up easier when it is time to put it back together.

The reason some will go in any spline is they are worn out. you will notice you have to wiggle and work it in when it is not lined up but when it IS lined up it will slide right in with the greatest of ease

Good luck!

At TDC cylinder #1 the splined shaft's "missing tooth" should be at exactly 6 o'clock (the missing tooth matches up with the timing mark on the cam sprocket).

that would mean it could be at 12 o'clock also depending on compresion stroke or not.

This is what I always read out of my Chilton/Haynes manual: The key slot lines up at the 9:00 position while the #1 piston is at TDC. Pull your plug out and place your finger over the hole and when you feel compression and the keyway is approaching 9:00, replace the opti and should fire right up. This has worked everytime for me without variation. The times I couldn't get the car to start, it was off somewhere and I eventually found it.
