Default valvetrain questions for 918 springs

Im installing a 847 cam in now. i got all my valvetrain in but now im hearing all this stuff about needing to use the +.05 locks for it. I got locaters/918 springs/10deg. retainers and the stock size locks. Now do i need to go back and change out all my locks?!

Did you check the installed height? You should always check the installed height when putting in new springs...

no i did not. i dont have access to that tool. Im thinking there has to be a ton of people out there that has done this combo and people that have measured it that can comment on it. Its a pretty comon set-up IMO.

What retainer are you using?

Most of the retainers are 7° type not 10 and you really should check the installed height. You can get all the tools needed to check for less the $20. It wont be the best stuff but it will work.

i got 10deg. ti retainers. my local shop said i should have between .030-.040 clearance before coilbind. so ill check that first before i make any changes as of right now.

There's no way to know the installed height on the car without checking it, on my old heads with stock vavles the installed height varied by .030". They run +.05 locks to keep them out of coilbind, without the +.05 locks the installed height would be around 1.70-1.73.

ok, then ill swap out to the +.05 locks then and play it safe. will that effect my pushrod length also? Right now the rocker tip is pretty close to the end on the exhaust side of the valve. So if i raise up the valve the +.05 would that almose be the same as making the pushrod .050 shorter?

im gonna try and get a tool to measure my height install. are they all gonna be pretty much the same or do i need to do all 16?

How would changing the locks raise up the valves?

yea nevermind that, ha. iv been thinking about everything too much. i feel like im at school learning everything there is to know about valvetrains. im gonna hunt down a valve spring compressor and a height checker. and put all this "maby" **** to rest.

Now because i cant do anything more tonight i did a little measuring. My machine shop said that as along as im within .030-.040 between coils that ill be fine and not go into coil bind. SO i measured the coils with a feeler gauge... All the coils are at a different measurement. The last one was touching the coil on top of it, next one was about .040 gap and got bigger from there, the very top one had a pretty big gap to where it has no chance of binding at all but the bottom one was already touching coils. Does the bottom one matter since its not "binding" its just touching? Ill get a measure on it as soon as i can find the tools but am i at least in the ballpark or not even close?
