Default need exhaust help

I went with a 3 inch exhaust on my car. Hooker LTs, 3 in. X, dynatech bullets and turndowns. I think if I went with 2 1/2 in. I could be making more torque. Explain to me if I am right, and also what the logic is behind a 2 1/2 in X-pipe making more power than a 3 in, if anyone knows.

Im pretty sure it comes down to the velocity of the gasses leaving the system, and not neccesarily a reduction in back pressure.
