Default rear main seal?

Is a leaking rear main seal a regular occurence on LT1s? And to replace the rear main seal how is it to be done, do you just drop the pan, or split the egine/trans?

it wears out over time just like anything, you have o drop the tranny and clutch or converter, flywheel

I think the intake manifold leak is more of a occurence, I tought it was possibly my rear main seal when here it was the manifold, fixed it and solved all my leaking problems

no its not normal. pull the transmission, flywheel/flexplate, drop the rear of the pan, then unbolt and remove the rear seal retainer. it's not the easiest of jobs to complete.

Are you sure it's not the rear intake gasket leaking. LT1's and conventional small block chevy motors are notorious for leaking there. It may look like it was coming from the rear main seal but it could be the rear intake leaking oil. Just a hunch because I have seen it many times before including my car. if it is not that then be prepared to pull the tranny, if your good it should only take you less than an hour. Getting the rear main seal out of the retainer is probably the hardest part about the change. But make sure you grease it up good before putting it back on.

Rarely does the rear main leak. It is usually the rear of the oil pan that is leaking, or the intake manifold.

I had an a4...which even at a shop they'll charge you more to do as its "harder"

Found out my seal looked perfectly fine...the bastard just 'slid out', i took what was the "old" seal and put in the new one...the damn thing looked brand new!
