Default Retainers

Well I can get a set of titanium retainers really cheap. I was just wondering if I can use them though. Part # CCA-730-16. Is anyone here using them, and if so with what springs? Thanks -Corey

most common springs that they will work with are the Comp 987 and Comp 977 dbl springs.

Thanks. Will I see any benefit to running either of those springs with the titanium retainers or should I run a different spring? Its a Hotcam, currently with the Hotcam kit springs, which everyone says is just barely adequate.

probably not.

the retainers you have are light anyway and you actually probably have enough spring pressure to keep the valve trane stable with that cam.

A bigger cam with faster ramps (CC 503, CC 306, GM 847, etc) would want more spring pressure than you have now and a better spring (bee hive or dbl)would be needed.

The light retainer CAN NOT make any HP but if the spring is on the verge of not being able to handle the cam, the weight of a steel retainer can push it over the edge and therefore end up losing power.

I would not buy them unless you plan on a cam swap and need them for some dbl springs.

So will the hotcam springs take almost daily beatings? I like to spin it up everytime I take the car out, hotcam'd motor isn't in the car yet, so I wanted to do whatever I could to it before I put the engine in. I guess I'm the personality type that will go WOT to hit a 50 mph speed limit would give a good idea what kind of abuse I'm worried about the springs taking. I realize the hotcam isn't a really high rev cam, but I want the margin of worry to be low on the valve spring side of things.

Then put some beehives on it. I had 987s on my small cam and they weren't enough spring to do the job.
Plus to use the springs your talking about, the heads will need to be cut for the larger locators.

Can I use these retainers with the LPE dual springs that I guess are $70 a set?

If not I suppose I will get the beehives from PAC and figure out all I need to run those.
