I have always felt like the 396 has a little to much stroke. I like my 383, Not speaking from experience with the 396 though ,only knew one person that had one and his was slow. But he was a idiot also so that probably had something to do with it.

Lol well i can be a idiot if a need 2 be. im wanting to take it out on the weekends street racing and 2 the track every now and then. and wanting like 7 flats on motor in 1\8 and like 450 hp or so or more it will make it

my buddy was going the 396 route and after talking to lloyd elliot he went with the 383. lloyd said that the extra 5-10 hp that the 396 will make is not worth the extra cash to clearance the block for the rods and stroke. lloyd stated he had dyno graphs of a 383 and a 396 with his le3 set up on both and the 396 only made like 5-10 more hp.

You’re right about 396 owners being idiots. It is caused from brain-cells being compressed from the 396’s unbelievable 1/4 mile acceleration! So, don’t build a 396 like me, you’ll get drain-bamage!

the cost was the same when I built mine...might check with your machine shop.
