Default Any Ideas?

I finally got my motor back together and in the car, starts right up, adjusted the rockers etc, here is my problem, the car idled fine when I had the alternator disconnected and just connected to a charger(when doing the rockers). After putting everything back together, the car hardly wants to run. I disconnected the battery lead from the alt. and the idle picks up and runs, when I reconnect it, it dies out. I am figuring it is the alternator, but just wanted any other ideas before I drop the $$$. Thanks.

sounds like the alt has a short in it. Do you have a DVOM? If so, when the car is running, with the alt hooked up, check the voltage across the batt, if the alt in good it will be around 14.5 to 13.5, depending on what electricals are running. If not, which i presume it will be running prolly around 8-9 volts, it needs an alternator...

Or it could just be a short in the alternator wiring, maybe a pinched wire somewhere...
