Default OBD I SES light question-1995 Z28

When the SES light is on with an OBD 1 car (1995 Z28) for the EGR valve does the car run in "Open Loop" or "Limp mode," hurting performance and fuel economy. I know this happens with an OBD 2 car. I was told by my mechanic buddy to just wait until the SES light is on all of the time before I change it. The light only comes on occasionally but I'm wondering how much it's hurting my fuel economy and if I should just change it now.
Thanks.

no it does not run in open loop or limp mode for an egr code.

There are some codes where you will lose a lot of power (like the knock sensor one) but egr is not one of those.

now, if you actually have a problem with the egr valve and it is stuck open or something then you could lose power, but if the code is just there because you deleted it or something then it will have no effect.
