Default Trans whine on decel

Did a search but most seem to be able trans whine on acceleration.
Pretty much any gear I have it in the tranny whines when I let off of the gas. Goes away completely when Im accelerating or when the clutch is pressed in or it's in nuetral.

Any ideas?

Are you positive it's the trans and not the rear diff?

I've seen whiny T56 boxes quiet down when the fluid is changed to Synchromesh (GM or Pennzoil), but your description sounds more like the rear differential.

Hmm What would cause the rear to just start whining all of a sudden? I just had the seal replaced about a year ago w new fluid. The 12bolt has run fantastic for the last 4 years w.o any noise.

And the sound seems to be coming from where the transmission is, right under the dash and not near the back of the car.

I'd change the fluid in the trans, probably something on the thick side like Amsoil ATD or Pennzoil Synchromesh.

Change Fluid and check the u-joints! Those would be my first two things to look at!

Sounds like the diff to me. Does it make the same noise in 4th gear?

It makes the noise in all gears when I let off the gas. More prominent in 5th and 6th.

Turns out I had a bad pinion seal which is why it was leaking and upon tearing it apart I had a bad pinion bearing as well which caused the howling I heard.
