Default Locked Tires

I was driving the other day in the city and noticed that I could hear and audible whine from what I believe was the trans. It would seem to not be as loud in early gears then get louder at the later gears. I drove slowly home only to have my tires lock up on the expressway. It seems it has locked the tires up they had to drag it onto the flat bed. I can put it in gear and start it and when i let the clutch out it will move a bit then lock up again.

Any suggestions what it could be? Thanks in advance.

I would look at your rear before the tranny.

Disconnected the driveshaft and the rear tires rotate fine and it still locks up when the car is in gear. Any other suggestions by chance? I appreciate the help.

If it's not the rear as you surmise, then you've got some major gear/bearing damage in the transmission and it will need a rebuild. Depending on your budget and/or rebuild skills, a lockup like you're describing may be cheaper to fix by buying another transmission...

Did you check to see if you have any fluid in the trans?

The locked trans could mean:

-failed bearings that weld the rollers to the shaft

-failed snap ring that causes the gears/washers to load to what ever is next to them due to the helical cut gears and weld themselves

I pulled the rear end today and it looks great, I had the driveshaft out and put it in first and second and the output shaft moved but I had some difficulties getting it in third and fourth gear. Maybe a rebuild from Tickshift or Gator Transmissions will do the trick and the entire transmission isnt a pile of junk. Not sure. Hopefully I can come up with funds to fix it if not I might just sell the car as is.
