Default Need bolt size asap!

Long story short, the bolt that closes the clamp that holds the torque arm to the tranny is missing. I took a bolt off from where the tranny connects to the bell housing to see if it's the same size, so I could purchase one from the hardware store, and it's loose in the hole, wont tighten down. THen I took a bolt off the bar that supports the back of the tranny and this also doesn't fit, too loose in the hole. Does anyone know the specs of the bolt I need. I am kinda worried that the hole might have been stripped, Is this bolt on another part of the car that I can take it off and try before I run to the store?
Thanks
Justin

I think that bolt size is a 10mm x 1.5 which is the same as the bellhousing bolt you tested. Since the bolt was missing and the bolt you tested was loose I bet the hole is stripped. I'll check the size to be sure tomorrow when I get back to the shop.

Thanks for the help. What suprised me is that the bolt from the bell housing that I tested could be pulled in and out by hand with a little wiggleing of the bolt, and I figured if the hole was stripped it wouldn't come out that easy, but I could be wrong.

If that hole is stripped, what do I need to do to fix it?
Thanks

You can repair the threads with a heli-coil kit. Pretty much any auto parts house will carry some type of thread repair kit in that size. Bolt stores like Fastenal should have them as well.

Or you could buy a crossmember from someone like UMI which would relocate the mounting position to the crossmember itself rather than the transmission.

Yes, Jonathan@Tick is correct 10mm x 1.5, but it's 30mm long. The trans--->bellhousing bolts are the same size, but they're 40mm in length. Make sure you get at least grade 8.8 or higher (9.8, 10.9, 12.9).
If it's stripped (which it sounds like it is...), you'll need to drill it out, then heli-coil it in order to get back to the original size. Another option would be to tap it out to the next largest size, which would be 7/16 x 14, and 1 1/4in long. Get at least grade 5, but grade 8 would be best. You'll probably have to get it at a more specialized store like Ace hardware or a bolt supply house. Good luck!!!
