Default sbc swap, what t56?

I want to swap a sbc into my 4th gen, but i have a huge decision to make, and im not sure w3hich way to go with it.

i can buy an lt1 t56 and have it bolt up no problem, but I want a hydraulic TO bearing.

can i use a ls1 t56 with a lt1 bellhousing? I would rather not buy an adapter plate because im assuming I will have to shorten the driveshaft.. any suggestions?

2 bolts don't line up in the LT1 bell / LS1 face.

There's a limited amount of space for a hyd. TO brg. & a push clutch in the front of an LT1 face / bell (McLeod's first design for that app. was too deep for it but that's years ago) but that's a valid option.

One option is to drill & tap the 7th hole in the block for LS1 bell, shim the slave on an LS1 trans. and use a pop-out pinion starter ('88-96 Corvette) in case the bellhousing doesn't allow the starter you have.

thanks, will the ls1 bellhousing bolts align up with the block at all? I was under the impression that they were totally different.

I have a starter that can mount probably a thousand different ways, im pretty sure it should work, haha.

As for small blocks,
5 bolts are common to 1955 and newer.
6th is on everything but LS_ due to proximity to water or bore.
7th is on early stuff and LS_; can be tapped on the rest.

The easy way to do this is use Quicktime bellhousing PN: RM-6023. This will allow an old school SBC to bolt up to the LS1 t56. If you're making any power and/or running stick tires you should have a steel bellhousing anyway IMO.

thanks! Now, if i were to get this bellhousing, would I have to change anything, like input shaft/driveshaft length?

Can the stock t56 crossmember work?
