Default clacking noise coming from shifter?

M6 has a real load clacking sound that comes from what sounds like the shifter. the noise is there when the clutch is in or out, in gear or out of gear. you can make the noise go away for a few moments by slightly moving shifter into a "sweet spot" while in neutral. the sound sounds like if you had a metal finger and stuck it halfway into a metal fan. the sound speeds up with the engine RPM's.

thought it might be a rod but no metal fleck in oil and a rod knock wouldnt go away when i play with the shifter. any help is appreciated. thank you

i aslo got under the car and looked at where the shifter base bolts to the transmission and there is Transmission fluid all over the place
