Default something missing on tailhousing?

so i just had my transmission rebuilt, and there seems to be either a sleeve or seal of some sort missing from the tailhousing when it's time to reinstall

here's a pic from the Install University McLeod Clutch Install document:

and attached is a pic i just snapped of my transmission's tailhousing.

there's a little black sleeve in the first pic, but it does not exist on my transmission anymore. is this piece necessary, and if so, is it available at normal auto parts stores? what is this piece?

That's just an OEM seal with a foreskin dust boot. Yours has a Felpro seal without the boot. No loss of performance, just might get dust on your slip yoke..

ok, but it won't really hurt anything with the boot not being there? it's not there to keep the driveshaft yoke from going too far into the tailhousing or something?

It's just a stone/ debris shield. It would do nothing to limit the yoke travel. If that yoke contacted the boot, the seal would be ripped out of the extension.
