Question cammed ls1 6 speed guys quick question!

Alright I just bought a 2002 camaro z28 T56 and it has a tune/g5x4 cam/full exhaust.

of course at low RPM's the car wants to surge and buck a bit but at 50mph what gear do you guys run in? 5th or 4th gear? I'm running stock 3.42's if that helps. it feels like 5th may be too tall for 50-55mph but 4th also increases the RPM's, It makes it very difficult to maintain 50mph speed limits in 5th due to the surge I keep running up to 60mph unknowingly to avoid the occasional surge. I realize the cam is a "secret" cam and its a fairly good lift.

I have a cammed M6 and the first thing I'll say is the tune is not optimal. A good tune will take care of that. As far as what gear, I would say 4th for sure.

I never use 5th in the city. only time that happens is on this highway @ 65+mph. most of the time 3rd gear city and side streets. you sure your cam doesn't call for a different gear ratio? like 4:10s etc etc? this would help keep the engine in the right rpm range designed for that cam.

Needs gear and needs a better tune.

Usually in a tune they just end up pulling timing to get rid of the surge so you'll probably want someone to street tune it. Gears did nothing to help mine, I hoped it would but oh well. I have gotten used to it now, don't even notice it anymore.

A lot of it is in the tune and it can usually be smoothed out pretty good depending how big the cam is. But what you have to realize is that once you get to a certain point on cam overlap, no amount of tuning is going to clean it up. You can't expect to putt around at 1500rpm in a high gear with a big ol 20* overlap cam and have it drive like stock. I'm not sure how big the g5x4 is though. I had a pretty big cam (30* overlap) in my 370 when it was a nitrous motor and it was still loping at 1700rpm lol. You desperately need some gears in that thing for sure though.

I agree and believe it's in the MS3 realm, which is just going to be the nature of the beast especially with stock compression/cubes. Not sure what clutch is in the car, but a lighter one will intensify bucking by not soaking up/dampening the surging. Gears should definitely help you get into a higher rpm to smooth things out, you can play around with this calculator if you haven't already to see the difference...

I used to putt town around in 6th with the street sweeper cam all the time,1300-1500rpms. could even do it going, like 40? so 900 rpms just to show people it didnt start to surge or buck, the cam and tune were great. for people that had a setup that couldn't

Another vote for gears and a tune. I have an MS3, and theres no bucking or surging.

Both of y'all have 4.30 gears and you can definitely drive around cam surge by keeping the engine under load, regardless if his tune wasn't done on the street as well as the dyno I'm sure there is some driveability that can be improved upon.
