I want to go the other route. I want to go from the auto to a 6 speed. I don't know about the ECM question though, sorry.

I'm not ready yet. I just got the car about 3 months ago. If and when I do the swap, it won't be until the winter time.

I went from a4 to m6 a few years ago. You can use the same ECM and the wiring is 95% the same as well. There are a ton of great resources in the stickies that you'll find helpful.

It's best to find someone who does want to trade their stuff though, that makes life incredibly simple.
