Default Tranny rebuild question

My car has been grinding its 3rd, (intermittently, around town usually not, always at high rpm) and 4th (99% of the time 4th does grind) gears for maybe 2k miles.

After talking to a transmission technician I work with, he scared me a little, saying that it might not just be synchros, but the actual gears themselves could need replacing. Could this be true? 4th is the input shaft, correct? I can't imagine if my 3rd gear had teeth sheared/grinded down that it would transfer power and work properly at all.

I've had a hard time finding the answer to this question, as I myself thought when gears start grinding, as long as the gear still engages and works, you only need synchros, and obviously forks/pads etc upon rebuild.

It's fixable.
Tear it down before ordering parts.
Original 3-4 shift forks through 2002 wallow out at the shift rail and get replaced.

It would be difficult to tear down, being as its my dd. It seems like quality 3rd gears are hard to fine too.

I guess I'm looking for other peoples experiences, like how often people needed to order gears when doing rebuilds, or if its always almost just blocker rings, synchros etc. I gave Tick a ring today, they through out "Ehhh maybe a 75% chance your 3rd is good" lol

Jmd gave you solid advice from his vast knowledge of these transmissions. When he replies to a post you should listen.
