5/6 Driven Gear Question
Hey everybody, long time reader, first time poster. Have a question for you guys; I'm used to the countershaft spinning and then having a synchro lock a gear to the main shaft.
On the T-56 it looks like this is the case with 1/2 and 3/4, (and maybe reverse?); but it looks like 5th & 6th ride on the countershaft and there is a 5/6 driven gear on the mainshaft....how in the world does the 5/6 riding on the countershaft and the 5/6 driven on the main work?

its the same except the drive connection/ locking is done at the cluster shaft. The input shaft is engaged with the cluster gear at all times through the "head " gear and the synchro locks th other half of the drive to the output shaft.

Hey calhoon, thanks for the quick reply. So...1-4 works normally as I've seen in mechanic books, etc. but 5&6 just freewheel on their bearings on the countershaft when it spins. Only when you hook them up via a synchro and its spline do they start to spin, and then they spin the 5/6 driven gear on the mainshaft? And fifth driven/5 and sixth driven/6 are always connected, but the actual 5&6 gears are just freewheeling until engaged? (Since output shaft is spinning, fifth & sixth driven are spinning and so are 5/6...is this wasted friction because they are always spinning when the output shaft does?)
Does that sound correct? Thanks again for the help.
