Default T56 6-5 shift?

Well when i bought my car it had a bad aftermarket hurst shifter on it. When i would go to shift hard it felt like the shifter was lifting out of the car. So i took it off to find the shifter was actually bad and was lifting out of the little plastic cup which it in turned ruined. Well when it did this once which it may not have anything to do with the shifter which i now replaced with a pro 5.0 with a umi cut short stick. When you go to shift back from 6th gear straight into 5th it will not go like it is hitting something solid. If you just take it from 6th act like your putting into 4th then back to 5th it goes right in real nice. Do you think there is a seloniod of some sort keeping me from doing that or is the tranny messed up. Thanks
