Transmission going out?

Transmission going out? In my '96 S10 I think my transmission is going out. Sometimes when I drive it there is a sound comming from under the truck and the shifter **** shakes a good deal. Other times it is fine, the truck only has 39,000 miles on it. Would there be a way to tell if the transmission is going out, or the clutch slipping against the flywheel?
