Default Hard 6th gear engagement....HELP!!

I've been having problems getting my tranny to engage into 6th. I will pull the shifter down towards 6th and it will go passed the gate. However, when I let off the clutch, the shifter will vibrate like crazy and gets pushed back up towards 5th. Sometimes it will.....I wouldn't say grind....but grumble. If I yank it down pretty hard, it will usually engage.

Did I mess up a synchro or bend a shift fork? I don't understand why 6th gear of all gears.

Definitely sounds like the 5/6 synchro. I have the same exact problem getting into fourth.

It's either a shift fork or a synchro. Only way to really tell is rip it apart and expect. Either way do it now before you make things worse by driving it.

Not what I wanted to hear. Tearing into this thing kind of scares me.

Well on the bright side 6th gear is easy to get at and inspect, just have to take the tailhousing off. If you can remove and install the trans yourself (Not that bad of a job) you could probably get away having someone do the internals for less than $200 parts and labor.

Getting it out is no problem at all. In fact I'm actually a technician at a Toyota dealership. I just don't have a whole lot of experience with transmission internals.
