Default Auto to Manual swap...few q's

i am dying to do a manual conversion on my 99 trans am i should have never settled for an automatic!! is the t56 my only choice? is there an aftermarket transmission that would work better? or anything equivalent that is cheaper? how bout all the other parts like the hydralics etc even the pedals? could i use a g6's adjustable pedlas? thatd be cool. please let me know guys! the reason i ask is when it came time to replace the tranny in my 94 v-6 the gm tranny was around $4000 but they replaced it with an aftermarket that should withstand up to 750 horsepower cause they knew i was going to convert to a v-8 and it was only $1600 installed and it was awesome till my brother totaled the car. i was wondering if theres anything similar for my 99 ls1

there are some ppl that are using the T5's, you can look on the search to see if anyone has done it, may need a diff bell housing. I'm not so big on 4 gen transmissions, do don't quote me on it.
