Default Clutch chatter.

Someone should explain to me what Clutch Chatter is. I've owned two manuals, and don't know what it is.

with having a high holding capacity clutch such as a Spec 3 and so on, they are basically made for quick grabs off the line at hard launches. If you look at the clutch disk itself it is usally seperated into 6 sections or so rather than 1 big area. When you slip or ride the clutch in regular street driving and are not trying to basically launch the car you will sometimes experience the force of the clutch trying to engage since it wants to grab. Then you'll feel this in the car which is of a chattering action until you fully engage the clutch.

Clutch chatter is caused by the skipping of the clutch disc across the face of the pressure-plate or flywheel surface. It is most commonly felt during the release of the clutch pedal when starting from a stopped position and thus affects 1st and Reverse primarily. It is felt through the pedal prodominantly but can also be felt through the shifter, or car in general, in more severe instances. It can be accompanied by a sound as well that is commonly described as a light banging. In most instances this sound and feeling will dissipate as miles are driven. Pucked discs are more prone to this than full faced disc. I hope this info helps. Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks,

i do!

I've had my clutch, well, my car (Spec 3 came in it) for what i have drove, which is now 10000 miles since 05....my clutch still chatters when taking off like a sane person,,is that normal?
I also had an issue going in reverse the other day, made a rubbing noise,,it had never done that before, wondering if not being hard on my clutch is bad on it and if it is going out? i could'nt tell you how many miles are on the clutch, but the 2000 TA has only 40000 miles on it now, Nate (NAsty Performance) states the clutch was proably put in around the 20000 mile mark,,,sorry for the hijack

No worries...Chatter with a pucked clutch is not abnormal at all. In fact, as the disc material has evolved over time the amount of chatter has been reduced...but ultimately with a pucked disc you will have a much greater potential for chatter as there is less surface area. The sound you reference is likley related to temperature. With lower temps you can hear an audible sound as the disc scuffs the flywheel during engagement/release. Remember the stage 3 is a CSM (Carbon-Semi-Metallic) disc and it is contacting a steel surface on the flywheel. Metal on metal contact can lead to noises just like this. You should hear my Hawk HP+ brake-pads when its cold out...but boy do they make the car stop! Let me know if you have any further questions.
