Default Changed fluid on my friends car, now grinds?

I helped my friend change his tranny fluid on his 02 Formula. It's a M6, but when we took it for a ride it would slightly grind 1-2, and 2-3 shift, but if you pushed the clutch in and hold it for like two seconds it would shift fine.

Another kicker is after driving the car for a mile or so, it shifts smooth. We put Dexron IV (couldn't find any Dex III) in the tranny with almost four quarts of fluid. He said the car never had this problem before we changed the fluid, and the car had 57k miles on it. We also changed the clutch fluid about a week prior.

Any help?

Well I would either sum it up to didn't notice it before syndrome, or cheap fluid.
It almost sounds like it's more clutch hydraulics than anything.

It is fluid from a stealership, so it is GM fluid. Think there might be air in the hydraulics? It shifts fine under WOT also.

Thanks for the help

Yes, GM Dexron IV ATF. It was almost $20 a quart from the stealership

I'd say hydraulics, mine did that on the 1-2 and 2-3, changed the master to the 01-02 version and did the drill mod and now it shifts fine. I had the internals checked on the rebuild and found no significant wear on the syncros or gears, so it was all hydraulics.

I already had the 01-02 slave installed but it still did the 1-2 and 2-3 grind after that.

Don't know if the drill mod is done to his car, but the pedal has never gotten stuck before. There are no leaks or anything around the slave or MC if that helps.
