Make sure you take off the transmission before you go after the bell housing. It took us a while to figure this one out... We spent too much time trying to figure out how to get to the top bolts, till we finally decided it was physically impossible.
Not sure if this is your problem, but hope it helps.
Oh, also, this helped me a lot:

There are 2 on the top of the tranny, one on the drivers and one on the passenger side. The one on the pax side is kind of a pain cuz the vent tube is in the way. Just like with bellhousing bolts, use a very long extension and a swivel.

Just take the trans off the bell housing, then the housing off of the trans, its easy. For the top bolts from trans to bell housing and even bellhousing to motor. YOu need a long extention and swivel.
We had to use a ratchet, the impact gun lost too much tq due to the length (1/2" drive lol)

+1 BlackScreaminMachine, I used a couple of extensions with a rachet. Getting enough extensions to go along the top of the t-56 and behind it. Worked fine, you may need a swivel to get the bolts next to the floor boards on the bell housing though. Makes it a little easier. Good luck

ok so, i need to go in from behind the transmission, not the side of it, to get to the top 2 or however many bolts there are connecting the trans to the bellhousing correct?,, using alot of extensions and swivels?
