Default Locked Six Speed

I have a 1996 Camaro, not much else to give other then LT1 the 6spd. I was driving on the interstate when i pulled off at a gas station, and found my transmission had locked up. I have no 1st,2nd,3rd or 4th, but i do have 5th,6th and reverse. It feels like skip shift is engaged, which makes no sense cause i jacked my car up after getting it home. And found the harness was actually broken. To my knowledge this would disable it and set the ses light. If i am wrong i would like to know, cause it is my daily drive till i get a beater.

A locked up transmission is one that has more than one gear engaged at a time or simply does not turn. Yours is not locked up. You may have shift linkage problems that block out certain gates. The first thing I would check is the health of the plastic socked the shifter engages in the trans. It should be glued in place. If loose and/ or damaged, it could cause what you have stated.

But the transmission has neutral ? I would get a "little" rough with the shifter stick and try to get it over into the 3-4 slots . Make sure you do this with the car not running .

Pull the shifter off and look at the linkage connection. With the shifter off, see if the shifter can move side-to side. Check that socket as well.
