Default T56 Whining in 5th & 6th

So I just got this '02 SS Camaro, 41,000 miles on it and it makes a whining noise in 5th and 6th under load at highway speeds only. I'm not even positive its the tranny. Maybe something in the rear? Any input?

There is a high possiblitiy that it is the rear end gears.

Listen for the sound when accelerating or decelerating, just bump to neutral with the car idling and coasting and you should "hear" the pitch change with speed. If that changes to "crunch" followed by ticks or bang, you're 9 inch fund must be opened ASAP.
