JUNE 13th, 2006 SX PERFORMANCE STREET CAR SHOOTOUT FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Tony Huff, Collinsville, IL 1968 454 Nova 0.261 10.163 129.43
RU Tony Buhl, Lebanon, IL 1989 347 Mustang -0.047 (foul) 10.570 129.55

With nine of eleven events completed so far in 2006, the SX Performance Street Car Shootout
Series at Gateway International Raceway reached the annual mid-season break with some
astonishing new levels of performance. Tony Huff, the veteran competitor who has competed in the
series since the first event on April 4th, 2004, became the most prolific of all SCSS racers by
becoming the first driver to appear in five final rounds in one season...and the second half of 2006 is
yet to come!

Huff’s third victory of 2006 tied him with Brian Grote (2005) and Darryl Jauernig (2004) for the most
SCSS wins in a season. His was only one of the remarkable milestones made by the SCSS
contingent at the event, however; no less than 140 different drivers have clocked under 13.00
seconds during the official qualifying periods this year. In 2005, a total of 310 drivers ran 12.99 or
quicker in twenty-three completed events.

Racers were greeted by fantastic weather conditions for June 13th. The ambient temperature ranged
from a high of 80 degrees to a low of 68 with low humidity and high barometric pressure. The
corrected elevation reached a high of only 1773 feet above sea level and dropped to 1023 feet
during final eliminations.

Although Jim Harris pushed his blue Z06 Corvette to an 11.54/122.85 to lead timed trials, qualifying
opened with a continuation of the nightmarish 2006 season of David Starns. The St. Louisan’s
ten-second 355-cubic inch ‘91 Mustang was on its way to a 10.9-second pass, (with a 7.02/98.04
eighth-mile), when a freeze plug exited the engine block at half-track and not only ended Starns’
event but kept the GIR track crews busy for nearly twenty-five minutes in clean-up. When qualifying
resumed, one of the most anticipated runs of the season was made. Jamie Middlesworth, whose
modular-motored ‘98 Mustang had received serious upgrades since its 10.86/131 best of 2005,
eased off the starting line with plenty of caution, (evidenced by the 1.96-second 60-feet elapsed
time), and gradually applied the power of its supercharged 281-cubic inch powerplant through the
quarter-mile. After an insane 8.00/108 eighth-mile, Middlesworth became the fourth fastest driver in
SCSS history with an incredible 11.40 at 147.39 miles per hour!

Tony Buhl, whose maroon Vortech-blown ‘89 Mustang had already appeared in three 2006 final
rounds, (including the last two in a row), eventually clocked a 10.83/127.39 to grab the pole but the
battle for a final-round berth was only beginning. Within only a few minutes, Michael Faller’s “Team
Katfish” LS1-powered ‘98 Camaro from Springfield, Illinois, hit a 10.89/126.16 to take the second slot
only to be knocked to third by Clint North’s silver ‘02 Trans Am which blasted to a phenomenal
career-best 10.776 at 126.10 miles per hour. Incredibly, Buhl’s Ford returned to record an identical
10.776 but regained the lead with a faster 127.91 mph speed!

Meanwhile, Middlesworth’s black mod-motored Mustang made an attempt to put more power to the
asphalt. With an improved, (but still apprehensive), 1.70 60-feet ET and a 7.28/92 eighth-mile, the
Ford hit 11.03 at 138.66 mph. Then, with only five minutes remaining in qualifying, Tony Huff’s silver
‘68 Nova pulled into the water box. In 10.29 seconds, Huff’s 468-inch Chevy shot to the pole position
at 129.29 mph . With two minutes remaining, Buhl shut out Clint North’s Trans Am with an improved
10.64/129.44 and, on the final run of the qualifying period, Faller made a last-gasp attempt only to
fall short with a 10.86/126.45.

Although Huff and Buhl would be battling in the final round for the third consecutive week, (another
SCSS record), Huff quickly made a test run before the final during the timed trials after qualifying to
record an even quicker 10.23/129.38. That run was overshadowed, however, when Middlesworth
made one last shot and, even with a still-lazy 1.68 60-feet ET, charged to a 6.32/116.31 eighth-mile
before shutting down early to a 10.02 at only 121 mph!

“We were working on a customer’s car back at the shop”, noted Huff concerning his uncharacteristic
late arrival, “and we had all kinds of problems. All of sudden, I realized we’d better get to the track or
I was going to be out of luck! I guess we cut it kind of close but we got in the show on one shot”. Buhl
was hoping for a clean race, adding, “I just hope we can get this done without one of us redlighting!”,
alluding to the fact that the last two SCSS titles had been decided by either Buhl or Huff fouling in the
final round.

Unfortunately, Buhl would have to bear a repeat of the May 30th finale in the ongoing “Battle of the
Tonys”. Leaving the starting line forty-seven thousandths of a second too soon, even Buhl’s
career-best 10.57 at 129.55 mph wouldn’t have stopped Huff’s 10.16 at 129.43. On top of everything
else, Buhl was missed his chance at entry into the SCSS 130 MPH Club by 0.45 mph!

NOTES FROM THE SCSS: Tony Buhl and Hal Marshall who still lead the point standings for
the 2006 SCSS Championship with eight “Fastest Street Car Qualifier” decals each. The point
championship is determined by the number of Qualifier stickers earned...Derrick Roeslein, who spent
most of the winter season hunting deer and increasing the size of his family, made his first ‘06 SCSS
appearance and the two-time finalist pushed his LS1-powered pewter ’02 Camaro to a career-best
10.97/122.50...Matt Martin seems to have gotten a handle on his turbocharged ‘86 302 Mustang; a
best-ever 11.10/126.09 during qualifying was followed by an 11.02 at 126.71 during late timed trials.
He also hit two tire-spinning passes of 11.73/128.63 and 11.31/127.84...Although William Page’s
turbo V6 Buick Grand National qualified 16th at 12.08/110 in the tenth quickest field ever, the event
featured the second-quickest Top Eight ever, (an 11.10 by Martin). Page has the bizarre distinction
of qualifying on the “bump spot” four times in SCSS history! Page actually ran a best of
11.96/112.09 after qualifying ended...Matt Crittendon, who won the third SCSS race ever held back
on April 20th, 2004, made a rare appearance with his 306-inch 89 Mustang and qualified tenth...For
the second time this year, Mike Faller and Lambert Fleck made their best run of the event during late
timed trials. This time, the Springfield gang ran 10.67/126.77 after qualifying ended...The SCSS
series will take a week off as the NHRA POWERade Series comes to Gateway next week with the
O’Reilly Midwest Nationals June 23-25. The SCSS will return on Tuesday, June 27th.

JUNE 13th, 2006 STLSR.COM SPORT TUNER SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Adnon Omerovic, St. Louis, MO 1995 122 Talon 0.288 12.507 117.88
RU Rick Poepping, Ballwin, MO 2004 231 Grand Prix 0.150 13.595 99.38

Initially, competitors in the St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown Series shuddered
when they saw the black Ford Pinto of SCSS 4-Cylinder Record Holder Joe Laramee pull through
the gates. The 10.5-second, 129 mph turbocharged machine won back-to-back titles on April 11th
and April 18th while annihilating all previous marks in the Tuner division. Those same contestants
heaved a sigh of relief when the Pinto’s first pass was marked by a tire-spinning launch, (due to
staging several miles out of the groove), and a blown head gasket at half-track resulting in a coasting
12.07 at only 82.66 mph...the second-slowest qualifying run in the SCSS records.

Amazingly, that run remained the number one qualifier but, with Laramee’s mount out of the running,
the second and third qualifiers would actually wage war for the trophies. In fact, since the fourth pair
of timed trials when he clocked a 13.19 at a whopping 118.06 miles per hour, it was Adnon “Otto”
Omerovic who was the STSS driver of note. Omerovic, whose black 4G63T-powered ‘95 Talon is a
member of the Gateway DSM team, ( http://www.gatewaydsm.org/ ), was making its first appearance
of the year but was attracting plenty of attention, especially after a 12.12 at 119.04 mph during
qualifying. The run made Omerovic the fifth quickest STSS driver of the 2006 season and the fifth
fastest STSS driver ever.

Rick Poepping, whose St. Louis Club Grand Prix team, ( http://www.stlclubgp.com ), was still
enjoying last week’s victory by Brad Gross, survived a four-way battle for the third qualifying slot
when his burnt orange 2004 Grand Prix hit a best of 13.596/99.48 to outqualify Charles Randolph’s
2000 Subaru WRX STi, (13.66/99.18), Kevin Parker’s impressive supercharged ‘06 Cobalt SS,
(13.67/104.03), and Rob Mocher’s ‘05 WRX STi, (13.68/100.05). With a wildly diverse contingent of
STS entries, even Volkswagen was well represented with a best performance of 13.97/07.50 by
Ryan Willenbrock’s ‘04 R32.

Poepping’s supercharged GTP had received a substantial influx of technology during the off-season,
including both transmission and engine work, to improve almost a half-second from its 2005 best. In
the final round, a holeshot of thirteen hundredths a second kept the Pontiac ahead of Omerovic’s
Eagle until the 400-feet mark when the turbocharged Talon cruised by on its way to a 12.50/118.34
victory over Peopping’s second 13.59 at 99.38 mph. “Through this series and the DSM website, I’ve
met a lot of the top guys in the area”, stated Omerovic during trophy presentations in front of the
main grandstand. “I’ve talked to folks like P.J., (Patrick Jacobsmeyer, the ten-time finalist and King of
the STS series), and Justin, (Bondurant, the past record holder and eight-time finalist), who are
really good people. They’ve really helped me get this car to the point where it’s running almost over
120 miles per hour”.

JUNE 13th, 2006 GATEWAYRACEWAY.COM SUPER TRUCK SHOWDOWN FINAL
ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Hal Marshall, Collinsville, IL 1986 350 S-10 0.759 11.240 118.34
RU John Zerkle, Springfield, IL 2005 F250 0.495 14.178 94.16

So, “Animal Hal” is now up to twelve career victories and he has only lost ONE final round
of the last thirteen events he has attended going back to August 30th of 2005. We’re talking more
than just history here; it’s domination, pure and simple. It’s no surprise he has the largest fan base of
any Tuesday night racer and there is no question he is the King of the Super Truck Showdown
Series...at least until somebody shows up who can outrun him.

This time around, he ran solid 11.0s at over 120 mph including his pole-qualifying 11.00/124.45. It
was the rest of the field which drew attention with a diverse group of machinery battling for the honor
to line up against Hal’s little white S-10 pickup for a trophy. Tim Girardier’s unique ‘93 F150
Lightning, complete with original 351 Windsor engine, actually qualified second with an off-pace
12.74/108.32. The third qualifier, Gary Elliott of Godfrey, Illinois, drove a brand-new 2006 Jeep
Grand Cherokee unlike any other. Although the $40,000 SUV wasn’t the most expensive ride on the
property, (that honor went to Sean Williamson’s Glen Carbon, Illinois 1999 Mercedes-Benz E55
which ran 14.57/99.87 and sold for $99,900 new), Elliott’s Jeep SRT-8 featured a 420-horsepower,
372-cubic inch Dodge Hemi with 10.3:1 compression and a traction control system which allowed it
to launch with zero tirespin on its way to 1.90-second 60-feet ETs and a best of 13.58 at 100.79
mph. Then came Don Hilderbrand’s ‘67 Chevy C10 with 455 Oldsmobile power running a best of
13.94 at 94 mph. In the end, the finalist who answered the call was fifth qualifier John Zerkle, whose
bright white 2005 F250 was the event’s quickest diesel-powered machine with Zerkle’s first run under
fourteen seconds, a 13.995 at 94.00 mph.

Of course, Hal Marshall made short work of the smoker, but Zerkle was pleased, nonetheless. “I’m
buddies with Mike Faller and Lambert Fleck from Springfield, Illinois”, said Zerkle after the final. “and
I usually tow their Camaro down here to race. I decided to make some runs with it and see what
happens. When Hal came over to me before the final and I found out how quick he runs, I just kind of
shrugged and figured I’d run for the trophies, anyway. I sure didn’t have anything to lose!”.

Meanwhile, Hal’s current lack of problems is a welcome respite from his early-season weekly
disasters. “I’m happier than a pig in the sun”, said Hal during his weekly trophy acceptance, “and it
wouldn’t hurt my feelings a bit if things just stayed calm for a while”.
