How would I research a car I used to own?
In short, I owned a 64 GTO back in college, ~1987. I sold it to a guy and he sold it to some guy in Oak Park. This was in the early 90's. Is there any way to research who might own the car now? Is there anyway I can search on myself?

Well, maybe not youself, but if you give my buddies here a grand, not only will they research it for you, they can drop it off in your driveway.
Seriously though...
Run the VIN through Carfax? I don't have a clue..

if you have a friend that can run a VIN through the DMV in IL, you can see if it's been registered and to who. Would have to find someone that can do it like at a car dealership.
I can use my CVR program to track a VIN and find who owns it, when purchases/titled, and where it's "located"
If it's traveled out of state, not too sure on that one then.

This might be a long shot now with all the identity thefts, but I remember seeing a news program several years ago that documented how easy it was to get this type of information. The reporter went to the BMV, and paid a few bucks for some info. To get more info cost him a few more bucks, and so on and so forth....
Maybe Illinois has the same policy for buying info? Like I said, I'm sure some things have changed with all the identity thefts.

I don't have any of that info, it was fifteen years ago. I'll maybe look around on some GTO sites. I'm sure there can't be that many 64 GTO's that had the parts that mine had.

See if you have any paperwork around showing the VIN number, or maybe something showing the license plate number. Contact the DMV to see if they have your registration history back to that point and they might be able to give you the VIN that way. That's what I'm trying to do with my dad's 69 Camaro, but he sold it in '76 and all I have to go on is his license plate number.
