Wanting to enlist but need help
I am really looking for some help here. I am sort of torn between USAF active duty and The Air national Guard.
I have talked briefly with an Air National Guard Recruiter and they can get me into a "Fuels" job that offers a 20k Bonus. The other benefit of this is that the base I work on is only about 30 minutes from My friends and Family. I was also offered a Full time job working "fuels" on this base for a 1 year tour.
I have also been thinking about going active duty and picking a really cool and rewarding job. I'm single so the thought of traveling is exciting. I am not afraid to be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, so that is not a problem for me. Are there any real big benefits going active duty rather than guard ? I will be speaking with an USAF recruiter shortly.
If any of you could share your experiences it would be appreciated. I am very torn between the two.
thank you!

So do a 4 or 6 year enlistment active then go Guard. It's much easier to go Guard after your done with your enlistment or even going Palace Chase (where they let you out of your active contract to go Guard). But almost impossible no to come in to active duty after being Guard first.

plus i don't believe you'll get the experiences from Guard that you would being active duty. the bonus is a plus but don't do it for that, i know i could blow $20k in less than a week just on car parts if i had the option.

PSH who joins the air force lol jk jk. I believe being active gets better benefits also, at least i think the army does if i remember right. You can get 20k for doing re-enlistment after your first 2-6 years.

Going active first was the best thing I did. I Palace Chased out of active earlier in the year into a military technician job in the ANG and it's been great. The active duty experience can't be duplicated honestly. I miss it at times, but still doing what I love doing, being close to family and friends and being able to double dip on TDY's, can't beat it

My advice is look aside from the bonus, its honestly what it is a BONUS. Don't get into a job that you may or may not like. Find something you really want to do and do it.
In the end you will be happy, I've met many people with the good and the bad stories. Alot of the guys that sit there and complain that the military sucks are the ones that picked there job for the bonus, Thought a job was something it really wasn't or made more glamorous then what it is, or they are one of those people in highschool you see always complain about everything they can cause that's their look on life.
Too many people join the military and don't do the research they should to find the ups and downs of that job and military life. Look on military dot com for info on different jobs and life stories of people. Also about dot com is a great way to get more info on mos or job rating or w/e air force or air guard calls them. My recommendation is go active first. 4 years will fly by before you know it, and you will have so many life experiences that not many civi's or reserve/guard have.
Best of luck to you, and Thank you for making a commitment to our freedom, I applaud you. Just don't go and spend all your money at the bars and strip clubs, there will be a weekly occurrence of stories from other service men you will hear If you need anyone to talk to that's not biased hit me up, I did a crap load of research before I gave my oath.
Look forward to hearing your decision, either way it takes ***** to join the military in a time of war.

I have decided to go Active Duty. I want to thank everyone here for posting. I feel like joining the Military is going to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. Once I go through MEPS and qualify for my job I will give everyone an update.

Hey welcome to the air force. You want to pick your job, but it is a job it has ups and downs good days and bad. Just do your best and try your hardest. Effort makes up for what you don't know. I would rather help airmen with a good attitude than a bad one.

don't go for fuels, that job blows.
anything maintenance will leave you hating life. aircrew, PJ, CCT, SOWT, TACP, EOD, SERE, intel are good things to look into.
all of the caps acronyms require a serious desire to be there, don't chose one of those on a whim.
