All great ideas. Glad you threw in calling cards. Some bases you can call and they will conect you for free to anywhere in the country at least thats the way it was the last time I was there. Dont recall wich ones though.

Car magazines, men's magazines (FHM, Maxim, Stuff, etc). Toiletries (razor cartridges), a big fat pillow (you cant get a pillow thats worth a **** over here). New white socks. Every soldier loves new socks, you just have no idea. Especially free ones. The crystal light/gatorade is a good idea as well.

it also depends on where he's going to be. if he will be in the trenches all the time, most of the above items will be much appreciated. White socks, snacks, crystal light packets, etc... if he's stuck on the base, he really won't need to much. maybe some calling cards. and still. white socks. most everything else can be had from the exchange. and the chaplain usually gets a mass load of toiletries..
if he's into car's. send some magazines. the Camaro maginzine is rare over here. i've seen it once.. or maybe you could send a hustler. .they don't even carry playboy over here.

Is he busy a lot? Or does he have a lot of free time on his hands? If he's busy, and especially out in the field, I can also say send him the toilatries, or simple stuff to remind him of home, or even an email or letters every once in a while showing your support.
If he has some free time on his hands, the best thing I had when I was deployed was my MP3 player. I used it almost every day for hours. Movies, magazines (ones that are allowed), tobacco products if he uses them, or even maybe a canned food or something that can take the abuse of the long mail ride that he would like to eat other than his chow hall food or MRE's.
The biggest thing is to keep in touch with him often and show him your support and let him know he is missed. These are the things that really keep us going strong out there especially when times get though, or we have been away for a long time.

Make a couple of DVD's with some **** on it. Include the Codecs if he doesn't have them. It's hard as hell to get mags thru customs from time to time. It's safer to put together a couple of DVD's and lable them as "Movies"
You can never have enough ****.
Snacks that you can't get there and he likes is always good. It's the thought of stuff you miss from home that helps the most.
