I had a similar scary situation. After rebuilding the motor and getting everything back together, I had taken a couple short, 1-2 miles trips, nothing long. Everything looked good.

Then I took her out to rip on her after buttoning everything up and making sure things were 100% and after doing a wot blast I stopped at a traffic light and the car stalled. Went to restart it and it wouldn't, but I smelled gas. When I hooked back up the fuel line going to the rails, I guess I didn't get the second 'click' on the disconnect clicked, so the fuel line came off and was being held on by the second 'safety' catch. I ran and grabbed a gallon of water and flushed everything off. I got lucky.
