My wife and I went to Banff (stayed at the Fairmont) for our honeymoon and our five year anniversary. I love that place, especially in the winter. We went the week of US Thanksgiving both times, which is off-season, so it's cheaper and there are NO crowds for anything. Lots of hiking, skiing (I don't ski, but it's there), and just a very relaxed, laid-back little town.

Banff is like 30-45 min drive from where we live. It's nice to drive in the city cuz it's surrounded by the mountains.
