ls1 knock help
I have never owned an ls1 car. i recently sold my lt1 and am now looking for an ls1. i found an 02 ws6auto with 74,000miles on it in florida i loved. it looked great but when i started it up i noticed a knock in the engine. The man told me most ls1s had this knock from the factory. It ran great and had good oil pressure. I still ended up not buying. i went to a freinds house, he owns an 01 ws6. he cranked hes up and it did the same thing. made the same noise. he said hes 2 previous ls1s had done the same. my question is, how do i know if its majorly wrong or if its just a factory defect?

I don't know man. Mine is gone by the time mine reads 100. All the ones I have ever been in or been around it went away. Seems like I read that some on here have it never quite go away. Don't know tho.

I think we need a better description of what you are calling a "knock".
If its a sewing machine ticking sound that is normal. That is merely valvetrain noise, and its amplified in these engines because they are OHV with aluminum block and heads.
If its a more of a rapping sound, its probably piston slap. Piston slap is not a problem per say, its simply the result of the short skirt piston design and piston to cylinder wall tolerances that are on the looser side. What you are hearing with piston slap is not the top of the pistons moving around in their bores, its the skirt moving slightly side to side.
If its a deep knocking sound, like a rod knocking around on a journal, then its probably a spun bearing.
