Default what gear set do I have

I have a '98 trans am, automatic with stock 16" rims, 245-50-16 tires. at 80mph the tachometer reads about 2200 rpm. So what gear do I have? I think I've read they come with 3.23, 2.73 and 3.42 for SS and WS6.

Not exactly. 2.73 was standard on all automatic cars, except WS6/SS, which received the manditory 3.23 option with an auto. 3.23 was also optional on base trim level auto V8s at extra cost.

Only M6 cars received 3.42, and that goes for all of them (base trim V8 all the way to WS6/SS).

You can check the codes on the SPID sticker on your driver's door jamb for GU5 (3.23) or GU2 (2.73), to see what your car came stock with.

is your speedo wrong? or are you just wondering what rear end gear ratio came in your car?

I wanted to know the gear set I have. I thought that someone could tell me based on what rpm the engine was turning at a given speed. But I looked on the door and it appears to be the 2.73 set. Thanks for the info guys.

I'm pretty sure they're 3.23s. I have a T56, and I ran about 2k rpm at 80 mph with stock 3.42s.

Ooops, should have read to the end...
