Default Engine Cleanup

I have an engine minus the heads and intake sitting in the garage. Threw a cover over it but its gotten some dust/dirt collected on it. What would be the best way to clean it up? Just using a wet towel? The engine is freshly machined so theres not any grease or carbon buildup, its just been sitting too long.

my dad always told me to cover the machined surfaces w/ vaseline to protect from rust. so i would say after cleaning it to coat it in vaseline to prevent rust.

I am NOT a fan of the vaseline idea, its too hard to clean off, I would soak it with wd40 (clan be cleaned off with brake or carb cleaner when your ready to assemble.
