Default Cleaning an engine

I am rebuilding a low mileage engine. I would like the engine to be a lot cleaner than it is. Can I just clean out the cylinder heads with degreaser....or is that a bad idea? What are the do's and don'ts of cleaning an engine?

Try to keep direct water/pressure off of the PCM and coil packs, Simple Green and similar products work great on most parts, but will haze aluminum. If you dilute the mixture with water 50/50 then it won't be as bad, and you can always use an aluminum polish to clean-up the front (flat) part of the heads, along with the AC condenser and other misc aluminum items. Don't know if it's the best way, but it's what I do and my engine bay looks great.
