Default Cam w/ stock heads

I have 00' Z-28 with headers, 3" y-pipe, Rumbler catback, and lid. I can't afford cam and heads together. I need advice on which cam will work well with stock heads.

I am in the same boat as you, except a little behind on supporting mods. I don't know if I would ever change the heads or not but I do want to cam the car eventually. I believe something like a 224R or 228R from TSP are recommended but there are other options as well.

There are soooo many cams that work with stock heads. It's hard to make suggestions when we don't know your plans/goals for the car. Give more detail as much as possible. Without knowing anything about your plans or car the above 224r and 228r are great proven cams that work. Good power noticeable idle and are definitely DD worthy with a good tune. But basically any cam is DD worthy with good tuning.

Plenty out there.

I run a Vengence Racing VRx4 which is like 228/230 on a 112 LSA and the lift is under 0.600" which is fine and I run on beehive springs (steel retainers) w/o issue.

Made 384 RWHP and 363 RWTQ on a M6 Trans, Steel Flywheel, 3" steel D/S, and Moser 12 Bolt with a Tru Crap diff. Probably would have been @ or over 400 had it a stock driveline which is fine for me.

Supporting Mods: SLP Lid, Self Ported stock TB, LS6 intake, Dynatech Headers (catted Y) and Corsa Cat Back as well as Dyno tune.

Most will make anywhere between 360-420 RWHP but it really depends on how much you care about peak hp, supporting mods, and good dyno tune which includes driveability tweaking.

FYI the cost of a cam swap is generally well over $1,000 between parts and tuning. Probably more like $1,500 between Cam, Pushrods, Spring Kit, Timing Chain, Oil pump, Dyno Tune, Gaskets and Fluids and thats doing your own work. So plan accordingly.

What the above guy said. I have 2400-2500 in a cam swap alone. That does include major parts install tune and all gaskets/fluids it all adds up quickly.

If you shop around its not to bad on price but can definetly get expensive fast. I have under $800 in mine but I bought my cam and pushrods used off a buddy. Plus me a buddy did the install and I either had all the tools or were able to borrow them.

$400 for the cam and hardened pushrods, used off a buddy.

$279 Pac 1518 springs, new.

$40 ls2 timing chain.

$4 for a new crank bolt.

$20 new crank seal.

$16 dex cool.

$4 oil pump o ring.

$1.50 at lowes for 2 5/16 wooden dowels for insurance against lifter drop.

If you have an 01-02 car the oil pump should be fine unless you have a billion miles.

To the OP, there are many many different cams you could run with stock heads. The 224 and 228 are probably the most common.

Like these guys have said, its really more about what kind of performance you want out of your car and what you use it for. Cams like the 224R and 228R are popular for daily driver cars because they have broad powerband making them pretty drivable. It really just depends what you want.
