I am planning to change all my fluids ( tranny, differential, oil etc). My SS has 112,000 miles and has been using synthetic since 3k miles. I live in Southern California so the cold isnt really a factor. What weight do you guys recommend for gear oil and engine oil?

I use 5W30 Pennzoil Platinum and 75W90 for the 'diff. I don't recall if I had to put some sort of additive into the 'diff. Additionally, I use either a Wix or Mobil-1 oil filter.

Hopefully LS6427 will chime in with his coolant flush procedure-it's written better than a shop manual.

Also, this thread might explode with people debating servicing the 'tranny fluid or not. Ultimately it's for you to decide on what you're going to do.

Don't forget power steering fluid. When I did mine it was blacker than the paint on the car. Another thing I've been wanting to do is a brake fluid flush; people are super-critical about oils, plugs, fuel pumps and everything else, but I'm sure 99% of car owners/enthusiasts never touch their brake fluid.

Oh don't forget the fuel filter too...

How did you flush your PS fluid?

I have a 99 camaro ss. What gear oil should I use and should I use the lim slip posi additive? Also, do I put a new diff cover gasket? I also would like to do the rear wheel bearings and would like to know what bearing(brand) I should use. Is timken good? Also, is replacing them difficult?

Redline 75w-90 for the diff, not sure if this fluid calls for an additive. Yes youll have to change the gasket.

Redline NS does not have the additive but most synthetics do but it depends on the diff you have...auburn needs additive and no synthetic. Worsen doesn't need the additive and can use synthetic.

I also wouldn't use a paper gasket for the rear. Use RTV red.

I have the Torsen differential that came on the 1999s and up. So, I would be safe using straight Mobil 1 75-90 right? Does the additive damage the differential if one were to add it?

Does anyone have an idea how hard it is to change rear wheel bearing on these camaros?

Additive is just for clutch type (stock) diff, if not clutch type it won't affect it at all if added. It just helps the clutch packs to slip when cornering, like in a supermarket lot.

I use the Gm additive by AC Delco #992694, it is what the owners manual recomends but I have used it in all clutch type diffs for 20 years now, works great. It is a small 114ml bottle. I keep like 5 on the shelf, it only requires one for all car diffs and 1/2 ton trucks, 3/4 ton and up 2 bottles.

You don't need the additive with the worsen, better without it.

Wheel bearings are easy just look at the FAQ or search for a write up. And get the free loan a tool slide hammer bearing puller from the parts store and use Rumen bearings.

I will add straight 75 90 and use the gasket+black rtv for cover. I need to find the FAQ for wheel bearing replacement.

OP
I use mobil 1 5w 30 for oil with mobil 1 filter. Mobil 1 gear oil with GM additive. I use synchromesh for tranny since mine is a manual.

You don't have to but it will make it easier to drain it all out. Use the black RTV for a gasket and make sure you scrape off all of the old paper one.
