Question How do you read Exhaust tip measurements

Need a little help on how the measurements on exhaust tips work. Let’s say that the pipe from the muffler is 2.5 in ID (inner diameter) outlet. Would you have to get tips with an inlet of 2.5 in. or do you have to go 2.75 in. in order to fit over the mufflers pipe.

Working from engine to exhaust exit, you never really want to reduce the ID of the tubes (adding restriction). Find some 2.5" tips and butt-weld them, or find some that will slip over the tubes and weld them.
