FlowMaster 40 CB rasp, I want it gone
Hey all,
When I got my Z, It came with a FlowMaster 40 CB, and the previous owner deleted the cat, and replaced the cat with a pipe smaller than the rest of the exhaust tubing. This could just be me, but when I rev it past 3k, it gets pretty raspy/gnarly sounding. I've been looking around youtube, and none of the other cars have the kind of rasp I do. Could it be that smaller pipe causing it all?
I plan on getting some LT headers in the near future, and I know some of you guys really like the sound of the magnaflow systems. Do the magnaflow CB's have much rasp to em? I don't think most "through" mufflers do, but it's better to ask before I spend money on it!
Thanks!

When you have an ORY, most of the catbacks will have some level of rasp. The quieter the muffler, the less rasp will be present. I've had Magnaflow before, and even that one has some amount of rasp with an ORY. SLP dual/dual was rasp free, but good luck finding one of those now (they've been discontinued for many years).
True duals are a good solution. Or some bullet mufflers in the Y-pipe - that will usually help eliminate rasp even with the louder catbacks.

I have a weld-in Flowmaster on my stock catback along with LT's and ORY. I don't have any rasp; rather, it's more a deep growl. Definitely not as scary sounding as TD's with bullets, but sounds like a performance car.
Further, you mention Flowmaster 40 series... They've only made an 80 series muffler for these cars which retains the crossflow design. Is yours perhaps just a single out?

If you don't like the amount of rasp and you still have stock manifolds , I don't recommend long tubes. just put a new cat on and get a magnaflow catback. or a stock exhaust system. just my opinion.
LS engines are just a little gnarly sounding by nature. the more you open the exhaust system up, the more it reveals itself. true dual systems and cats help, but they'll never sound as clean as say a mustang.
Oh wait you have an LT1. Nevermind lol

The muffler says "Flowmaster 40" and it looks pretty peaced together, so i'm assuming so, but It's got two tips that run directly to the muffler. I didn't sit there and look at it for too long. I've been wrong before!

Also, my buddy has a glasspack on his truck that he'll be giving it to me here sooner or later. I know it'll make my car a bit louder, and i'm thinking it'll cause a bit more rasp? maybe?
I'll work on getting a video up tonight.

Apon further research... My car has one of those flowmaster "2 in, 1 out" kinda mufflers. Part no. 775422 09511. The last guy told me it had a FM 40 Cb, and I just assumed he was right. It sounded flowmaterish.
And how do I upload a quicktime movie file? I recorded my exhaust via photobooth on a MacBook Air.

Likely this. With what you're explaining about it being pieced together, someone probably wanted something more aggressive than the crossflow 80 series so they made a 40 series fit. As long as it's not banging around or anything then I'd imagine it's alright. Hell, one could make a nice custom "2OTL" setup with that!

It couldn't be a "2 in, 1 out" unless you have true duals leading up to the muffler, and then just one tail pipe out the back.
If you instead meant "1 in, 2 out", then this in fact would be an 80 series crossflow, if it's even a Flowmaster at all. I say this because the part number you posted comes up as an IMCO muffler.
I have two Flowmaster 40 series mufflers on my Nova (these are single in, single out mufflers). They don't actually say "Flowmaster 40" on them, just "Flowmaster". Only way you could tell the specifics is with the part number. 40-series mufflers all have a part number that starts with either a 4, an 8, or a 9.

The car has a flowmaster sticker in the engine bay, so I'm assuming it a flowmaster. The muffler had 2 holes on one end, one hole on the other, with the mid pipe going into one hole, and the two tips coming out of the other two.
