Default Should I Buy?

Hello All-
I have been saving my pennies and looking around for an LS powered car for some time now. I found a 1999 F-body Camaro ls1 auto car that the owner says has transmission issues. He says the motor runs like a top but the trans slips. He is asking $2K. I m wondering if this is worth jumping at. I have a bit of mechanical know how and being as this will be a project car I'm not really too worried if it sits for bit while I work on it. My eventual plan is to turn this into a cruiser/drag car that I can drive on the weekends and thrash it on the track. Does anyone have any insight on having a trans rebuilt? Should i do it myself? Have it sent out? Pull it and then have someone build it? The list goes on and on... Any info is appreciated!

Sounds like a good deal to me, I'm not sure where you are located, in my part of the world my transmission shop charges about 1100 bucks to rebuild a 4l60E, they also beef up the sprag and clutches and put in a rebuilt converter.

If the body/paint is decent, buy it!

What's the mileage? That's a pretty good deal, though. You can still be under what some of these cars go for even after rebuilding the Trans.

If you do go for it, just make sure you have a reputable builder who really knows these trannies in particular. You can also start reading a lot on the automatic forum on this board.

Picking up a used tranny is a good option. I blew the forward sprag in 2008 racing at the strip, drove it for 3 years in the manual mode, replaced the tranny in 2011. During those 3 years,I picked up 2 complete used 4L60Es',one in Indiana and one down in Cincinnati as prep for replacing the tranny. Put the Indiana one in and it's been going fine for 5 years now. Each tranny I picked up for $500 each and each one was complete with tailshaft housing and bellhousing. Both were out of 98-02 f-bods.
