Default Gauge help

I need to know if mileage is stored in the PCM or in the actual gauge itself. I have to swap gauges assemblys soon and was going to use one from a junk yard, but I don't want to screw up the mileage, I also don't want to have to pay a dealer for a brand new one either. I have heard both ways. Anyone have firsthand experience?

Mileage is stored in the gauge cluster, and the BCM. I have experimented with different clusters,,and the previous mileage is still in the odometer. I think a dealer can flash it back to zero..they might be able to change it to your true mileage..not sure though.
