How did everyone find out info about their cars?

How did everyone find out info about their cars? I've heard people saying that their car is number XXXX of XXXX with this such option installed and with option XXXX that only XXXX cars came with. I was wondering how everyone was finding out how they were getting their info? VIN search threw carmax or insider info??? i'm wanting to find out more about my car with it's options and what not, thanks for the help!!

Not sure how to get T/A options/color breakdown, etc.; but in terms of a WS6 build number, I was able to get mine directly from ASC back in 2000. I gave them a VIN, they gave me a build number and conversion date. Not sure if they still keep those records though.
