it is very popular in racing since it takes the oil and moves it from the engine sump to a remote location anywhere you want on the car. this makes it so the engine can sit lower, lowering the center of gravity, increasing handling capabilites. horsepower gain is maximized because there is virtually no oil in the pan and no internal pump. you can also increase your oil capacity as much as you want since it is not sitting under your crank. the only downside would be the increased weight from more oil.

There are basically 2 different types of engine oiling systems

wet sump: Oil is kept in an oil pan on engine and is pumped through the engine and back to the pan via an internal oil pump.

dry sump: Oil is kept in a remote tank located away from the engine somewhere on the vehicle. The oil is pumped through the engine and back to the external tank via an external pump driven by either an electric motor or off an accesory drive belt on the engine.

Dry sumps are prefferd for racing applications for primarily 2 reasons.
1. The oil stays alot cooler being it is pumped out of the engine and to a remote tank located away from the engine heat
2. It prevents starving the engine of oil in high speed turns where g forces would otherwise pull the oil away from the oil pump pickup in wet sump applications.

My next motor will be a dry sump. You can never get too much oil on the critical areas.
