Stock hydraulic roller lifters have a plunger of the pushrod end of the lifter. This plunger gets pushed in around .1 inches as the lifter is lifted by the cam. This plunging causes a lot less stress on the valetrain (pushrods, valve springs).

A solid roller lifter set does not have this plunger and every movement of the cam is solidly transfered to the valvetrain, thus is a bit noisier and wears out the valvetrain more as well as requires periodic lash adjustments. Only go solid in a full race car.
