Default paint on hood keeps spidering. why?

It's on my 2000 WS6. I haven't had it very long and i noticed that there is a couple places on the hood where the paint has spidered. It's fiberglass hood. My buddy at GM ran a check on it and it shows that the hood has been painted 3 times when it was under warrenty for that reason. Any idea why it is doing it? I would like to get it repainted but I would like to know what the cause is so i can make sure it doesn't do it again.

Did they put a flex agent in the paint?

Most likely the hood had stressed cracks, and repainting it is not going to fix it. The person fixing it will have to do fiberglass repair to it.

I'm guessing that they put the flex agents in the paint. It was done at a GM dealer. The hood looks fine under the bad spot in the paint. I'll have to look at it a little closer

I doubt they put a flex agent in the paint.

I agree with 383ysi on this one, the fiberglass itself is going to need repairing.

first off, it has nothing to do with flex agent. flex agent is for flexible parts, i.e. ppo, abs something of that sort. it makes the paint more elastic so it doesnt break if the part is lightly flexed. i've never seen flexible fiberglass. more than likely you have a stress crack (especially if you have a big cammed car) or it could be a reaction with the paint. you say the hood looks fine, if so, having been painted 3 times could be the problem. you have all those different layers going on- sealer, basecoat, clear, sometimes they can react with an old layer under it. hope you get it figured out

well it had the cracks in the paint before I put the cam in. Yea the dealer painted it 3 times for the same reason . There must be something making the paint crack because it has done it all the times in the same spot.

Are you sure they are not crows feet? Crows feet have nothing to do with structural integrity or flex or fiberglass. just has to be stripped of the paint where the crows feet began or they will keep coming back. Post Pics!!

Okay you ran the pink slip at the dealer, do a carfax and find out if it was ever wrecked......you may have some cheap hood the insurance company/previous owner put on there. Just a thought, good luck

I agree with just about everyone by saying your hood, wich is made of SMC not fiberglass, itself is cracked.

And in my opinion I think carfax is a joke. Before I bought my car from the second owner I ran a carfax, it said it was clean. Two days after I took delivery of it I realized the Rt. quater had extensive filler work and the pass. door was repalced (I've been doing body work for 10yrs. now).

Can you get some close up pics of it? It could be a few different things, some pics might help to identify the problem.

Like stated before, the hood is made from SMC "Sheet moulding compound", Fiberglass is a thing of the past. It had to have been flexed in the past in a collision or something and probably has stress cracks in the gel coat. the only way to get rid of them is to completely feather the cracked erea down to the reinforcing composit and repair/fill it from there. The GM easy heat resin/filler is the only product I have seen that will not shrink back over time and show an outline of the repaired erea. I dont care how well you feather it or how fine you finish the erea it will die back over time and you will see the repair with ordinary body fillers.

well I'm sure it has never been crashed because It's a one owner car and I also have looked many times to find something that would show that it had been wrecked. I found nothing. The hood just keeps spidering for some reason. The hood was repainted both times under warrenty
